Share your toys

To be perfectly honest, the main reason I wanted kids was to justify the purchase of large quantities of Legos.   I'm already prepping Cindy for the extravagant collection we will have on hand the moment we are sure Nate won't try to eat one.   I've already envisioned some of the projects (whole cities?) that we can take on.  I can already anticipate the inevitably awkward time when the kids both outgrow Legos before their dad.

Right now, Nate would definitely try to eat the bite size Legos, so we have to suffice with Duplo.  These are a larger, safer and far more cumbersome version of Legos.

The good thing is that we have been playing with them regularly.  Nate likes to pick them up and taste each one, individually.   Lily and I are a little more advanced, and usually like building a 'tower' as high as possible, often requiring a step-stool near the end.   Then she gives a little smile and kicks it down.   As time goes on, we have been working on more abstract creations, like a rudimentary person or house.    I make it a point to play together (e.g.: balancing the tower as she places the next piece) and together-separate (e.g.: each building our own thing), so she can get ideas from what I'm building and learn to balance the tower herself.

Last night, Lily and I were on the floor playing together, but separately, both working on different things.    Lily was building a tower and I was accumulating blue squares for my project.    She suddenly left the room and went to tell mom that I wasn't sharing.   In my search for blue blocks, I had swapped a piece at the base of her tower, and it appears she didn't like that.   I apologized and wasn't sure who was the bigger kid.
