Linguistic Observations @ 22 Months

Lily is regularly using 2 word combinations.   It's simple stuff - 'Hi Dad-dy', 'Bye Dad-dy' or 'Ba-by on' (to ask for help putting clothes on a doll), but it would seem to be one of the first steps toward developing language.

If prompted, she'll often try new words and usually does a pretty good job.    Many times she looks nervous to say a word, when prompted.   I don't like to push her too much, because I'm guessing the stress here is from trying something new - frustration.   She'll say the words when she is good and ready to do it, and rushing it won't have any benefit.

It would be hard to count the number of words she understands at this point.   She recognizes just about anything you throw at her, and has probably gotten a lot better at making sense of new words just from the context.   So, I'd assume the vocabulary of what she actually understands is exploding.

She's using more purpose specific words.    For example, after shoveling some snow I pointed out the 'shovel' to her and left it outside as we went into the house.   She said 'bye' as if to note that the shovel would stay outside, just like her sign off to us, before going to bed, is 'bye'.  More and more, purpose specific words are filling in though, so, 'hi' becomes 'good morning', 'bye' becomes 'good night' and  'move' becomes 'up' or 'down'.

One thing I haven't seen her recognize fully is color.   She's beginning to pick out shapes, but seems oblivious when we point out different colors.   She knows the words - and uses them for naming her baby's 'Yellow' & 'Green'.  She also says 'Purple', 'Blue' and some others, but when prompted to identify a color she rarely gets it right.    This is nothing to worry about, at her age, and (barring undiagnosed color-blindness) will be interesting when she finally grasps onto the concept.
